In one sentence
A guardrail is a fixed limit on what an AI is allowed to do, enforced outside the model so it cannot be talked around.
The simple model
The model interprets and decides, and its decisions are probabilistic. A guardrail is the opposite: a hard, deterministic rule that sits around the model and constrains it, no matter what it produces.
For example, a guardrail might enforce "never issue a refund above 500 without human approval," or "only send emails to addresses on the customer record." These are not suggestions to the model. They are limits the model cannot exceed, because they are checked and enforced separately.
Why you care
Because AI output can be wrong or unexpected, you do not want the model's own judgment to be the only thing standing between it and a harmful action. Guardrails give you certainty where the model gives you probability.
- They enforce prohibited actions reliably.
- They cap consequential actions with limits: amounts, quantities, recipients, working hours.
- They hold even when the model is confidently wrong, or is manipulated by a crafted input.
This is the deterministic safety layer around a probabilistic system.
Guardrails are enforced, not requested
The key property is where the limit lives. Telling the model "please do not exceed 500" in its instructions is a request, and the model may not follow it. A real guardrail is enforced by the surrounding system: the action is checked against the limit and blocked if it exceeds it, regardless of what the model wanted.
A small example
An agent could send appointment reminders. A guardrail limited it to sending only to numbers on the customer record, and only during business hours, enforced by the sending system. Even if the model produced a wrong recipient or ran at the wrong time, the guardrail blocked it. The model handled the message; the guardrail handled the limits.
What this does not solve
Guardrails enforce fixed limits; they cannot judge nuance or catch every kind of mistake within the limits. An action can be inside every guardrail and still be wrong for the situation. Combine guardrails with review where judgment matters.
