Use this when

You want the value of AI, answers, summaries, suggestions, without giving it the ability to change anything yet.

The pattern

QUESTION or TASK
      ↓
AI READS (documents, records, data)
      ↓
AI ANSWERS / SUMMARIZES / SUGGESTS
      ↓
person decides and acts in the normal way

The AI has read access only. It can look at information and produce output, but it cannot change records, send messages or trigger actions. Any acting is done by a person.

Why it works

Most of the risk in AI workflows comes from write access, where a wrong result becomes a wrong action. A read-only assistant removes that risk entirely while still delivering real value. It is the safest place to start and often the right permanent design. See read access vs write access.

Good fit

  • Answering questions from company knowledge, grounded in sources. See retrieve then answer.
  • Summarizing long documents or threads for a person.
  • Suggesting a classification or next step that a person confirms.
  • A first project, where you are still learning how the AI behaves.

Poor fit

  • Work whose whole value is in taking the action automatically, where a suggestion adds little.
  • Cases where reading itself exposes sensitive information to the wrong people. Read-only is not risk-free for privacy.

What this does not solve

A read-only assistant cannot complete work that requires action; it hands that back to a person. If the bottleneck is the acting, not the deciding, this pattern helps less. It also does not remove the need to control what the AI can read.
